Coffee: The Essential Ingredient in Book Marketing

Marketing The Indie Way

There are many things an independent author needs to understand about marketing.

Advertising. Social media. Websites. Search engines. Mailing lists. Keywords. Analytics. Conversion rates.

And coffee.

Especially coffee.

In fact, I am beginning to suspect that coffee may be the most important of the lot.

This morning began, as many mornings do, with me staring at a computer screen wondering what I was supposed to be doing.

Apparently, I was marketing.

I knew this because I had told myself:

"Today, I are mostly marketing."

The grammar alone should have warned me that caffeine levels were dangerously low.

So, coffee was administered.

Within a remarkably short period of time, several previously disconnected thoughts began bumping into one another.

One of my free book collections, The Brittle Midnight Starter Collection, has been downloaded rather enthusiastically since I introduced it.

That's good.

Very good, in fact.

But there is a peculiar problem with giving books away.

People take them.

This may sound like the entire purpose of the exercise, but eventually an author begins wondering whether some of those people might like another book.

Possibly even one involving money.

This is where the second cup of coffee becomes important.

The Birth of an Offer

The Brittle Midnight Starter Collection introduces readers to two of my historical fiction series, The Midnight Series and The Brittle Saga.

It contains four complete eBooks: a prequel novella and the first novel from each series.

And it's completely free.

So rather than hide it somewhere on the website and occasionally point people towards it, I decided to give it somewhere prominent to live.

And thus, fortified by coffee, Offers was born.

You'll now find an Offers page at The Fiction Bookstore, where I'll feature a special collection or promotion.

But here's the cunning bit.

It won't always be the same one.

One month you might find The Brittle Midnight Starter Collection.

Another month it might be The Ragged Demon Starter Collection, introducing readers to my science fiction and supernatural books.

Then perhaps The Perfect Noir Starter Collection will creep out of a dark alley and demand its turn.

There may be 99¢ offers.

There may be bundles.

There may be Christmas specials.

There may even be something I haven't thought of yet.

That's what the third cup of coffee is for.

Four Books. No Catch.

For the moment, however, the featured offer for September 2026 is The Brittle Midnight Starter Collection.

It's an introduction to two historical fiction series in one collection, containing four complete eBooks.

And it's FREE.

The download is fulfilled by BookFunnel, so you can read the books on Kindle, Apple, Kobo, Nook and many other devices and apps, or simply read them online in your browser.

No complicated treasure hunt through half a dozen retailers.

Just visit the Offers page, choose the collection and start reading.

So, Does Coffee Really Help Marketing?

I have absolutely no scientific evidence whatsoever.

But this morning I started with a cup of coffee and ended up with a new way of introducing readers to my books.

Therefore, according to the rigorous scientific standards traditionally employed by authors before breakfast:

Coffee causes marketing.

I think that's conclusive. The Kane household is never without Columbian coffee and cream, it's an essential to good marketing practices.

Now, I just need another cup while I work out what October's offer is going to be.
