But how did they become those people?
Before the Brittle Sea goes back to the years before the main story and explores the choices, compromises, and experiences that shaped them.
In the shipyards of New York, Liverpool, and Belfast, William Harker discovers that power does not always announce itself. Sometimes it hides in ledgers, signatures, closed doors, and carefully maintained silence. He learns that survival can depend upon knowing when to look away, when to comply, and when to accept what is offered, whatever the eventual cost.
Thousands of miles away, in the villages of Ukraine, Magda Asparov is learning a very different lesson. Her world demands resolve, restraint, and the courage to decide not merely what she must do to survive, but what she refuses to become in the process.
Their stories unfold separately, two lives moving towards a future neither can imagine. Around them, industry expands, fortunes are made, corruption flourishes, and an increasingly confident world places its faith in progress, engineering, and steel.
Yet beneath that confidence, the first cracks are already appearing.
Before the Brittle Sea is the story of William and Magda before The Brittle Sea. It is a standalone historical novella, but it also reveals the origins of two people whose decisions will echo through The Brittle Saga Trilogy.
Before the sea became brittle, so did the world around them.
