 • The Midnight Series •

Before the war began, danger had already found her.

Europe stands on the edge of war. Jessie Fordham, recently graduated from Cambridge and carrying more questions than certainty, travels into a continent already shifting beneath her feet. The newspapers speak of diplomacy and hope, yet on the streets and people's front parlours a different mood stirs, uneasy and sharp.

Jessie has been taught how to observe and how to listen. What she has not been taught is how to place her trust. Companions become strangers. Strangers become threats. Every conversation seems to hide another meaning. Every journey feels watched.

She must learn quickly. The world she knew is fading, and the one taking its place will demand more of her than she ever believed herself able to give.

In the summer of 1939, Jessie Fordham graduates from Cambridge University with a mind buzzing with academic achievements but a heart burdened by family strife. Jessie is travelling to her parents’ summer house, le lac de minuit, the midnight lake, nestled in the tranquil French Ardennes. Yet, Jessie dreads the impending months, haunted by memories of a fractured childhood spent evading confrontations with her father, Albert, and stepmother, Armel. Suspicions of their clandestine affair during her mother’s illness linger, casting a shadow over family bonds.

As tensions simmer beneath the idyllic facade of midnight lake, the Fordham family reunites against the backdrop of looming war. With the spectre of conflict hanging heavy in the air, Jessie’s world is upended when Germany’s invasion of France in May 1940 thrusts her father, Albert, into the heart of diplomatic turmoil as Britain’s Military Attaché to France.

Summoned to the British Embassy in Paris, Albert entrusts Jessie with a perilous mission: safeguarding a crucial secret and delivering it to British intelligence in London. Charged with the safety of her siblings and household staff, Jessie finds herself entangled in a desperate gambit to navigate the treacherous landscape of wartime Europe.

With Dunkirk as their beacon of hope amidst the chaos, Jessie must summon every ounce of wit and courage to protect her charges and safeguard her father’s clandestine mission. From the dense foliage of the Ardennes Forest to the battered streets of Dunkirk, Jessie’s journey is a testament to resilience in the face of adversity, where loyalty, sacrifice, and the bonds of family are tested to the limit, amidst the tumult of war.

Cambridge graduate Jessie Fordham thought she had left behind the dark clouds of war. But when the shadowy leader of British intelligence reveals her uncle’s life is in peril, Jessie is pulled back into the heart of danger. Recruited by the clandestine SOE (Special Operations Executive), setup by Britain’s wartime leader Winston Churchill, Jessie must navigate the treacherous world of espionage, deception, and betrayal to save her uncle from certain death.

In a race against time, Jessie uncovers long-buried family secrets that could change everything. With the Gestapo closing in, she must rely on her wits, courage, and an iron resolve to survive and protect those she loves.

A gripping sequel to Walking Away from Midnight, Midnight’s Child is a pulse-pounding story of family, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of a woman at war.

The Man in Black is on the loose again.
But Jessie’s return to London uncovers a chilling reality: a Nazi mole is embedded within the British SIS, leading to the capture, torture, and execution of British agents parachuted into France. Debriefed by none other than Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Jessie receives a daunting new mission. Recognizing the gravity of the mole’s threat, Churchill appoints Jessie as his personal agent, entrusting her with the task of infiltrating the enemy’s network and dismantling their operations from within.

Going undercover in MI6 headquarters, Jessie soon uncovers treachery that extends far deeper than she and Churchill ever imagined. When an assassination attempt on Churchill fails, the tables turn, and she finds herself framed as a Nazi spy. Forced to go on the run, Jessie must navigate a web of deceit, always watching her back, knowing that capture means certain death.

Europe is burning. Networks of courage and betrayal shift with every passing night.

December 1941: Jessie Fordham, codename Midnight, is summoned into the shadows of Churchill’s War Office and thrown into a mission no one can agree on. Britain wants sabotage. De Gaulle demands loyalty. The Gestapo crave her capture.

From the fog-wrapped gardens of Worcestershire to the claustrophobic cells of Paris, from Washington’s fledgling OSS offices to the black markets of Marseille, Jessie walks a razor’s edge between resistance and ruin. Allies can be liars, enemies can wear friendly faces, and one slip of the tongue can mean death.

As retribution hunts her and the Nazi noose tightens, Jessie must decide who to trust, what to sacrifice, and how much of herself she can lose before the war claims everything.

Midnight’s Crisis is a taut, atmospheric WWII spy thriller where loyalty is fragile, survival is never guaranteed, and one woman’s courage might just turn the tide.

And somehow, Jessie must get the mine back to the submarine.

But Jessie has only been on the beach a few minutes when disaster strikes and Jessie is captured.
